Buddhism in Action for Daily Life

The essence of Buddhism is the conviction that we each have within us the ability to overcome any problem or difficulty that we may encounter in life.

This inherent potential is what we refer to as the Buddha nature, a state of life characterized by limitless courage, wisdom, and compassion.

Soka Gakkai International (SGI-USA) is a global community-based Buddhist organization that promotes peace, culture and education centered on respect for the dignity of life. More than 12 million SGI members around the world base their practice on the Lotus Sutra and the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, which teaches that each person has within the courage, wisdom and compassion to face and surmount any of life’s challenges. SGI-USA is the American branch of SGI, with more than 500 chapters and nearly 100 centers throughout the country.

The Alabama Central Chapter of consists of three districts: Birmingham West, Birmingham East, and Anniston. The Birmingham West district also covers the greater area of Tuscaloosa including the University of Alabama campus.

Our Buddhist Practice

Nichiren Daishonin taught that all the benefits of the wisdom contained in the Lotus Sutra can be realized by chanting its title [Nam] Myoho-renge-kyo. The universal law of life is expressed as Nam-myoho-renge-kyo; reciting this allows each individual to tap into the wisdom of their life to reveal their Buddha nature.

“Buddhism teaches that the mind encompasses the entire universe. When we change our innermost state of mind, our whole being changes, and this affects the world in which we live. This is the teaching of the oneness of life and its environment, and the principle of a single life-moment possessing three thousand realms. . . . Everything starts with a strong determination.”
